This is an idea for an activity you might like to try.
In September, 2014, Wendy Cowey observed Denise Mitchell, a Year 1 teacher at Tennant Creek Primary School, teach a lesson based on the book Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy (by Lynley Dodd).
This popular early years book tells of a day in the life of Hairy Maclary and his friends as they swagger round their home town together. The dogs felt in control as they strolled around the streets getting into mischief and generally feeling that they were the boss dogs. That is until, unexpectedly, they met Scarface Claw, 'the toughest tom in town.' All their bravado quickly vanished and they scuttled straight back home to bed.
As the class were at the end of their study of the book, they each made a map of the town to illustrate the route Hairy Maclary took to his bed. They also wrote ‘straight back home to bed’ as a joint reconstructed writing activity.
Here are some of the children's drawings.
