The Accelerated Literacy teaching sequence was developed to teach literacy through literature, and when done well, has proven to be very effective. It was never intended for teaching literacy through STEM, where the need for ‘Field’ knowledge creates additional challenges.
ALPAA members Helen Harper and Bronwyn Parkin have won a research grant from the Primary English Teachers’ Association of Australia (PETAA) to investigate scaffolding academic language and literacy with educationally marginalised students. Working in science and mathematics, they are using the same scaffolding principles that underpin the AL teaching sequence to try to develop a reliable scaffold for teachers.
ALPAA members are invited to a working lunch: to hear where the research is up to, and to provide advice and feedback on the work so far.
RSVP: Bernadette Thorne: Bernadette.firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday 30th July, 2017.
